Effect of Supplementation of Probiotics on the Growth Performance of Goat Kids

Abstract

A study was conducted to know the the effect of supplementation of combination of Lactobacillus acidophillus and Saccharomyces cerevisiacto feed, on growth performance in goat kids. Fourteen goat kids of 4-5 months age were selected in the goat farm at Krishnapuram of Perambalur district Tamilnadu , India .and randomly divided into two groups all the animals were allowed for grazing for 6-8 hours in addition the first group was fed with 100 g of concentrate feed (without probiotics), G-I and kept as control. The second group was fed with 100 g of concentrate feed (with probiotic - mixture of 1g Lactobacillus acidophillus + 1g Saccharomyces cerevisiaeper kg feed was fed G-II, the trial was carried out for 90 days. Body weight gain and average daily weight gain were recorded and it was observed that the kids fed with probiotic showed significantly (P<0.05) higher average daily weight gain (88 gm) than control. It was concluded that the use of probiotics was useful for higher weight gain in goats.
