Management of Fetal Maceration in a 2 Year Old Toy Poodle

Abstract

A two year old Toy Poodle was brought to the hospital for sudden onset of abdominal bloating, anorexia, and dullness. On physical examination animal was found to have pot belly appearance, engorged nipples and pyrexia. Ultrasound examination revealed intrauterine nonviable fetal masses. The condition was tentatively diagnosed as fetal death and animal was stabilised with intravenous antibiotic and uid therapy. Pre-operative haematological and biochemical analysis of the animal was found  t for anaesthesia. A mid-ventral celiotomy was performed and ovariohysterectomy was done. The condition was conrmed as fetal maceration. Post surgically, animal was maintained on systemic antibiotics, uid therapy and periodic wound dressing for the rst week and the animal made an uneventful recovery
