Abstract

For working equids treated in the  eld, surgical management of equine ocular setariosis (EOS) poses an unacceptable welfare risk. After literature review and expert consultation, we developed a medical protocol to treat EOS. Eight cases were treated with oral ivermectin @ 0.6mg/kg B.wt. at four days interval until the worm was immobile (maximum seven doses). Six parasites became immobile; remaining cases were either lost to follow-up or alternative treatment was sought by the owner. Limited ocular pathology was observed.
