Upgradation of Nondescript Goats with Boer Breed in Kanchipuram District of Tamilnadu - A Field Study

Abstract

In this study an effort was made to upgrade local nondescript goats by crossing them with Boer bucks. This study was taken up in two villages of Kanchipuram district after an assessment through participatory rural appraisal showed the need for upgradation of local goats. Twenty does of goat herds of each village were randomly divided into two groups of 10 each. Goats in control group (T1) were crossed with nondescript bucks and goats in the other group (T2) with Boer bucks. Boer upgraded kids showed significant (P < 0.05) improvement in growth rate as compared to nondescript kids. The results of this study showed that up gradation of local female goats with Boer bucks helped in improving growth performance.
