Physical Characterization of Donkeys of Braj Region of Uttar Pradesh and their Comparison with Other Donkey Populations of India

Abstract

The donkeys of the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh were studied for physical characteristics, management practices and utility and compared with other donkey breeds/populations of India. Majority of the donkey population in this region is predominantly of grey type with height at withers of102.33 ± 4.14 cm and 103.32 ± 4.88 cm, in males and females, respectively. Besides differences in their adaptive traits, the grey type donkeys of Braj region of Uttar Pradesh were significantly taller and heavier than Spiti, Ladakhi, Sindhi and AP-Brown donkeys both when male or female animals were compared.
