A Short Note on Fusarium spp Identification from Eggs of Olive Ridley Sea Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) in Banyuwangi, East Java, Indonesia

Abstract

The microorganism has been known play roles in decreasing sea turtle eggs hatching success, not only in natural nest but also semi-natural nest. Fusarium spp. are pathogenic bacteria which frequently threat incubation process in olive ridley sea turtle eggs. The most fatal condition which caused by Fusarium spp. Infection is early embryonic death inside sea turtle’s eggs. The present study aims to conduct isolation and identification of pathogenic fungi Fusarium spp. from unhatched eggs of olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea). The methods used in present study were fungal culture on Sabouroud Dextrose Agar (SDA) medium, and continued with morphology identification using lactophenol cotton blue staining method. A total of 15 unhatched eggs samples were collected from semi-natural hatching nest at boom beach Banyuwangi, East Java Province. The results reveal a total of 5 unhatched egg samples which were found positive infected with Fusarium spp. based on macroscopic and microscopic examination.
