Egg Binding in an Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria)

Abstract

A 3 year old female Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria) was brought to the Avian and Exotic Pet Unit, Madras Veterinary College Teaching Hospital with a history of frequent watery droppings, straining, respiratory distress and inability to lay egg for 48 hours. Physical examination revealed ventral abdominal enlargement, swollen cloaca and dyspnoea Radiograph showed the presence of egg inside cloacal region confirming egg binding. Parakeet was treated with 0.2 ml of liquid paraffin infused into the cloaca and pre oral administration of calcium gluconate @ 25mg/kg body weight. The bird laid an abnormal size egg with thickened shell after 12 hours of treatment.
