Socio-economic Profile of Buffalo Farmers in Yanam Region of Puducherry

Abstract

A study was conducted to know the socio-economic profile of buffalo farmers in Yanam region of Puducherry Union Territory. The study revealed that majority of the buffalo farmers in study region (Yanam) were men (95.3%) while just above one-fifth (44%), were more than 55 years old and owned an average herd size of 4.4 buffaloes with marginal land holding of less than 2.5 acres of land (44%). Majority of the buffalo farmers were having buffalo farming either as primary or secondary occupation with more than 11 years of experience in buffalo farming
