Abstract

This study aims to characterize the 18S SSU rRNA Cryptosporidium spp. in dogs in the Surabaya City - Indonesia. A total of 70 dog faecal samples were taken from animal hospitals and animal clinics. Cryptosporidium spp. isolated and identified microscopically then confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction and sequencing. A total of 40 samples were found to have Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts, measuring 2-6 ?m then confirmed by PCR. Six positive samples were sequenced and analyzed by blasting. The results showed similarity with Cryptosporidium canis and has a kinship with Cryptosporidium canis in Japan, China, Brazil, Australia, England, Romania, Mexico, France, Thailand, the Philippines and USA.

Key Words: Cryptosporidium, dog, molecular characterization.
